Like much of what we've discussed so far, I think it all has to do with context. So, like you said, "take it here" is a possibility. It may also depend on dialect. For instance, I spent my childhood in Illinois, until grade 2, when I moved to Louisville, KY. When my teacher said, "Put your things up," I didn't know whether she meant to put my notebook on my desk, or to put it away. I later figured out that "up" in this context means "away" to most Kentuckians.
